In Delhi, Lady Howell and Lord McKechnie were feted at a durbar -- a parade three miles in length. The processions included marching bands, soldiers in full and exotic costume, bejewled maharajahs and their retinues, and the horse-drawn carriages of visiting dignitaires. At the culmination of the parade came the viceroy, Lord Curzon, his wife, and his brother, the Duke of Connaught, all carried in a magnificent howdah. The guests and their attendants, numbering 150,000, were accommodated in 70 specially erected luxury camps, equipped with running water, lights, and telephones. Baron Tom Donahue and his wife, the Baroness Cindy Donahue, society matron of the grand duchy of Lichentenstein, recently completed a motor-car tour of Monaco, visiting upon the request of Colonel Jerry and Cindy diMassa (of the Boston diMassa's). The Donahues plan to winter on the Cote d'Azur prior to returning home aboard the trans-Atlantic steamer, Empress of India. Departing Coconut Cottage on 9 October, Lieutenant General and Mrs. Duff Sprawls sailed for their villa, Heart's Desire, located on Cap d'Antibes, bringing with them their prized Burmese monkey, Thibault. The Hon. Mr. Fitzsimmons Patrick Cheung, Chargé-d'Affaires of the American Legation in Peru, and Mrs. Cheung, the former Princess Ginsu of Tibet, are motoring to Monte Carlo from Aix-en-Provence, where they have been visiting Mr. Cheung's father, Rear Admiral S. Cheung, U.S.N., retired. Mr. Cheung is the breeder of the famous Schnauzer-Pincher, Champion Adelbert von Wiegengrosses of Tamerlane, said to be valued at $15,000. A guest in the Arabian room, the celebrated pianist Barto Crawford, was recently honored with an MBE presented by King Edward VIII. As a Member of the British Empire, the classically-trained musician will receive a single-cylinder Royal Enfield. |
